2023 Nevada Brownfields Workshops: Connecting the Dots – Reuse, Renew, Revitalize

We are excited to announce that the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP), along with the Center for Creative Land Recycling (CCLR) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will be hosting two Nevada Brownfield Workshops this September. The first workshop will take place on Thursday, September 7th, in Southern Nevada at the Silver Knights Lifeguard Arena in Henderson, NV. The second workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 13th, in Northern Nevada at the Brewery Art Center Ballroom in Carson City, NV. Similar content will be presented at both workshops. Pick the date and location most convenient to you!


  1. Thursday, September 7th | 8 AM – 3 PM: Southern Nevada – Silver Knights Lifeguard Arena in Henderson, NV
  2. Wednesday, September 13th | 8 AM – 3 PM: Northern Nevada – Brewery Arts Center Ballroom in Carson City, NV

The purpose of these workshops is to bring agencies together with a brownfields program or those thinking of developing one to learn about revitalizing and reusing vacant properties. The workshops will connect the dots and provide information on resources, funding, challenges, and strategies for redevelopment, leveraging both EPA and other federal and state resources.

Workshop sessions will begin at 8 AM and end at 2 PM with breakfast and lunch provided. Topics to be presented will include Brownfields 101 which will cover EPA Grant Programs and Resources, Nevada Brownfield Grantee Panel & Case Studies, Land Reuse, Redevelopment and Revitalization ~ Funding, Challenges and Strategies, and a Hot Topics Session. The Hot Topics Session will explore subjects such as Renewable Energy, Environmental Justice, Community Outreach, Affordable Housing, Workforce, and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.

These Nevada Brownfield Workshops provide a unique opportunity for government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, developers, and stakeholders to come together and learn how Brownfields programs can catalyze land reuse efforts. Sheryl Gonzales | Senior Brownfields Consultant - CCLR

Sheryl Gonzales has more than 35 years of experience supporting communities throughout California and Northern Nevada with community and economic development. She has worked for government, non-profits, and owned her own planning company for which she served on teams to develop parks, recreation and master plans, youth development and marketing programs.

Ignacio Dayrit | Lead Program Consultant - CCLR

Ignacio coordinates CCLR’s technical assistance program for redevelopment projects. Ignacio is a redevelopment expert having spent 20 years with the City of Emeryville’s Redevelopment Agency, where he was responsible for the city’s Brownfield Pilot Project. He has over 30 years of experience in public sector development including: fiscal and financial analysis, public debt financing, feasibility analyses, and urban design.

Ruben Ramos-Avina | NV Brownfields Program Coordinator - NDEP

Ruben Ramos-Avina has been the Nevada Brownfields Program Coordinator since January 2021. Ruben’s career in brownfields began in 2017 when he was hired as the Brownfields Program Coordinator for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. In his current position, Ruben provides oversight for projects receiving Nevada Brownfields Program funding; he works alongside state contractors, Nevada Brownfields Program assistance recipients, US EPA, and other stakeholders to help return brownfields to productive use. When requested, Ruben also provides support and technical assistance to Nevada entities receiving US EPA brownfields funding. Ruben received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Nevada, Reno in
2016.

Lisa Hanusiak | Brownfields Project Manager - U.S. EPA Region 9 Brownfields

Lisa Hanusiak is a brownfields project manager with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Pacific Southwest Region based in San Francisco, CA. She has over 30 years experience working as an environmental scientist. Prior to joining the Brownfields Program, Lisa served in EPA’s Superfund Program as a remedial project manager, Oil Program as an inspector, and Quality Assurance Office as a chemist.

Jasmine Williams | Life Scientist - U.S. EPA Region 9 Brownfields

Jasmine Williams is a Life Scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 9 Brownfields Team with a geographic focus in Southern Nevada. Previously, Jasmine spent seven years working for the agricultural and biotech industries as an Analytical Chemist & Compliance Officer managing quality initiatives for several small and midsize farms. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in French at Butler University and a master’s degree in Product Stewardship at Indiana University.
