From Nature to Nurture: Ecosystem Strategies for Effective Site Clean-Up
Join us for an engaging webinar, “From Nature to Nurture: Ecosystem Strategies for Effective Site Clean-Up,” where we explore innovative, nature-based solutions (NBS) to contaminated site remediation. This session will delve into powerful tools which harness fungi, bacteria, and plants to break down pollutants and restore ecological health. Our experts will also discuss the critical intersection of environmental justice and NBS —ensuring impacted communities have a voice in clean-up efforts and benefit from revitalized landscapes. Additionally, we will examine the growing field of workforce development in ecosystem-based clean-up, focusing on how training and educational opportunities can build local expertise and promote green jobs.
Whether you’re an environmental professional, community advocate, or policy-maker, this webinar will provide valuable insights into transforming degraded sites into vibrant, healthy ecosystems with benefits that extend beyond clean soil and water to social and economic resilience.

Danielle Stevenson is an applied scientist, mycologist and environmental problem-solver who works with soils, fungi, plants and people to address wastes and pollution in creative and circular ways. She has a PhD in Environmental Toxicology from the University of California Riverside. Her dissertation research within the Soil Biogeochemistry Group focused on phyto-mycoremediation of brownfields in Los Angeles. She also founded and runs D.I.Y. Fungi (est. 2012) for research, education and action around fungal food, medicine, waste management and remediation, and Healing City Soils (est. 2015) with the Compost Education Centre to provide soil metal testing, resources, and community bioremediation for people growing food. She currently serves on the Department of Toxic Substances Control's Equitable Community Revitalization Grant (ECRG) Treatment Technology Council (TTC) and the Board of Corenewal. She is involved in many projects and organizations around the world supporting regeneration of lands and waters, environmental education and community-capacity building. Coming from a background studying and working with soil, microbes and food production I have come to understand the importance of the little things. Through my areas of interest and on the job experience working with indigenous microbe cultivation, soil food web based compost production, regenerative farming and soil health development I know the importance of cultivating with nature and orchestrating organisms collaboration. Having been raised using natural medicine and medicinal food I've learned that immune system stimulation and overall organism health is largely determined by mineral/nutrient availability, plant matter intake, balanced diet, aerobic activity and microbial diversity. Soil, plants and microbes are no different. Studying regenerative practices and cultivation techniques from experts in their fields has given me a better understanding how to stimulate life both inside of an organism and in the soil. Microbes have laid the foundation of life as we know it and now we are re-learning to use these microbes to continue supporting life at its foundation. As a soil food web advisor, operations/cultivation specialist for a bio-active compost company, regenerative/organic farmer, ecological and permaculture designer microbes hold a special place in my heart, gut and life.
