Igniting Revitalization in Syracuse, NY

CCLR’s “Igniting Revitalization” workshop on November 8, 2018 in Syracuse attracted 93 redevelopment stakeholders and focused on connecting to community assets. The importance of aligning a revitalization project with a robust mix of assets was stressed repeatedly by participants across all lines of expertise.

Onondaga County Executive, Ryan McMahon

Community assets were well-represented at the conference. Public officials included Syracuse Mayor, The Honorable Ben Walsh and Onondaga County Executive, Ryan McMahon as well as our federal and state partners from NYS DEC, NYS DOS, NYSERDA, ESD, US EPA and US HUD. Private sector representatives included David Aitken of Pyramid Management, whose Destiny USA site has catalyzed redevelopment in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor, representatives of Racer Trust, who created a “marketing sheet” resource for this workshop. Honeywell, presented on public –private partnerships and had these lessons to share stemming from their work with the City and County:
Plan and coordinate between public/private at multiple levels
Align with broad community goals and look for opportunities to form partnerships
Engage with community early and often
Focus on long term goals when working with regulators on near term solutions

Re-imagining Reuse Options Panel featuring David Aitken, Michael Katz, Houtan Moaveni and Bob Murray.

The conference initiated a “Stand and Tell” panel that encouraged attendees to share information about their projects’ successes and challenges. Several municipalities shared updates on their projects, including Syracuse, Schenectady, Canajoharie, Lockport, Auburn, Rome, Utica, Amsterdam, and Cortland.

The Show Me the Money and Updates on NYS Programs, Policies and Regulations panels provided essential information on funding for redevelopment, including public grants and tax incentives. .

Talk about being in the moment . . . NYC DEC got an email while presenting about the Environmental Restoration Program awardees and publicly announced that three municipalities present at the workshop had been selected as grantees. Congratulations to each of them!
